No trains from Sutton on Christmas Day. Last year Thameslink via Mitcham Junction and Wimbledon shut 27 to 31 December. What is known for 2026 and when.

There will be no trains from Sutton or anywhere else in the borough on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and almost none on Boxing Day. The railway’s festive notice for 2026/27 covers Thursday 24 December to Monday 4 January 2027, but the engineering works and the train companies’ own timetables for that fortnight are not out yet (National Rail, Christmas and New Year 2026/27). Last Christmas, Thameslink services from Sutton into London were replaced for five days in a row, so plan for the same until the 2026 detail lands.

The quick answer

  • Christmas Day: no trains at all. Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December): most operators run nothing; a very limited service from a few is “to be confirmed”.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: trains finish earlier than normal. National Rail’s last-trains guide is due in late November or early December.
  • 2026 engineering works for Sutton’s lines are not published yet. Last year Network Rail announced them on 19 November (Southern and Thameslink) and 6 October (Waterloo lines).

What National Rail has said for 2026/27

From the National Rail Christmas and New Year notice, read on 25 September:

Date What happens
Thursday 24 December Services on many routes finish earlier than normal
Friday 25 December No National Rail services
Saturday 26 December Most operators run no service; a very limited service from a small number, details to be confirmed
Monday 28 December Substitute Boxing Day bank holiday; services to be confirmed
Thursday 31 December Services on some routes finish earlier than normal
Friday 1 January Special late services on several London routes after midnight; guide due early December

National Rail says each train company’s plans for the period will be added “from the beginning of October onwards”, including Southern, Thameslink and South Western Railway, the three that serve the borough.

What happened last year on Sutton’s lines

Last Christmas is the best guide to what to expect, because the same routes get the same kind of work.

Thameslink (Sutton, and the loop via Wimbledon or via Hackbridge and Mitcham Junction). Network Rail’s release of 19 November 2025 said “no Thameslink trains will run between London Blackfriars and Bellingham, and London Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction or Wimbledon from Saturday 27 December to Wednesday 31 December 2025” for signalling upgrades and maintenance. Rail tickets were accepted on London buses, trams and the Underground. The Sutton loop closed again on Sunday 4 January 2026 (Network Rail, 19 November 2025).

Southern (Sutton, Cheam, Belmont, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington and the other Victoria and London Bridge stations). The same release said only “a limited service will run on Boxing Day on some Southern routes”. The big Southern jobs last year were elsewhere: conductor rail at East Croydon, junctions at Gatwick and Three Bridges, and a rebuild of South Bermondsey station from 27 December to 4 January, when buses also replaced trains between London Bridge and Tulse Hill from 1 to 4 January.

South Western Railway (Worcester Park). Network Rail announced on 6 October 2025 that no trains would call at London Waterloo on 27 and 28 December 2025, with services ending at Clapham Junction, and reduced timetables to 4 January, while track was renewed near Queenstown Road (Network Rail, 6 October 2025). SWR ran nothing on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and its services ended before 10pm on Christmas Eve, with a last direct train to Epsom from Waterloo at 21.23 (South Western Railway, Christmas and New Year services). SWR’s page still shows those 2025 dates.

Belmont: a winter of works

Belmont station is part-way through its platform extension. Network Rail’s project page says work began in September 2026, with the platform extension due to finish by January 2027, the signalling by October 2027, and new services “from early 2028”. It warns that “temporary disruption may occur during engineering works” but has published no closure dates (Network Rail, upgrades to Belmont station). That is later than the council’s own target of new services by the end of 2027; the background is on our Belmont station upgrade page.

Driving and parking instead

Sutton Council says all its car parks run “normal hours and charges during December and January”, with one exception: Times Square and Gibson Road multi-storeys are closed on 25 December (Sutton Council, Christmas opening times). There is no free Christmas parking offer on that page. Normal hours and prices are on our parking in Sutton page, and road closures on Sutton roadworks and travel.

What is still to be confirmed

  • Southern, Thameslink and SWR timetables for 24 December to 4 January: from early October onwards.
  • Network Rail’s Christmas engineering works for the Sussex and Wessex routes: last year 6 October and 19 November.
  • Last trains from London on Christmas Eve and the New Year’s Eve late services: late November to early December.
  • TfL’s festive bus arrangements for Sutton’s routes: not yet published.

Everyday journey times and fares are on our Sutton train times to London page. If you have children at school, most Sutton schools break up on Friday 18 December: see Sutton school term dates.
